چکیده

The degree of automation at U.S. manufacturing plants differs widely across metropolitan areas. This paper examines the effect skill mix in a metropolitan area has on the degree of automation at plants in the area. In markets with a higher relative availability of lessskilled labor, comparable plants – even plants in the same narrow (4-digit SIC) industries – use less automation. The results hold in first difference as well. This relationship is stronger when examining an arguably exogenous component of local less-skilled labor supply derived from historical regional settlement patterns of immigrants. These results suggest automation is skill complementary, and supports models in which production technique responds to factor mix. These models may explain why research has repeatedly found that immigration has little impact on relative wages in a local labor market. JEL: J2, F1, O3

Immigration and Production Technology

Research on the labor market impact of immigration typically relies on a single-good model of production with separable capital. This article discusses theory and evidence that suggest that this standard model is too simple to capture the labor market impact of immigration. A reasonable level of capital-skill complementarity, for which there is considerable support outside research on immigrati...

RE SEARCH RAP A Wrap - Up of Recent Working

ABSORBING LOCAL SHOCKS IN LABOR SUPPLY Immigration to the U.S. in recent decades has been substantial and geographically concentrated. Nevertheless, research consistently finds little evidence that it has a major impact on the wages and employment rates of the native population in areas where immigrants settle. Though some recent evidence suggests that immigration may depress wages nationally, ...

Immigration and Skill Formation in Unionised Labour Markets

This paper analyses the impact of immigration on the welfare of the native population in an economy that consists of skilled and unskilled workers. Due to unionisation, the wage rate in the market for unskilled labour is above the competitive level. For a given skill endowment of the native population, we show that immigration reduces the welfare of the host country up to a certain threshold an...

Case Mix Planning using The Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution and Robust Estimation: a Case Study

Management of surgery units and operating room (OR) play key roles in optimizing the utilization of hospitals. On this line Case Mix Planning (CMP) is normally applied to long term planning of OR. This refers to allocating OR time to each patient’s group. In this paper a mathematical model is applied to optimize the allocation of OR time among surgical groups. In addition, another technique is ...

From Engineer to Taxi Driver? Occupational Skills and the Economic Outcomes of Immigrants

We examine the ability of male immigrants to transfer their occupational human capital using information from the O*NET and a unique dataset that includes both the last source country occupation and the first four years of occupations in Canada. We first augment a model of occupational choice and skill accumulation to derive predictions about the cross-border transferability of occupational hum...
